German e-commerce rules handled from day one

Selling online in Germany comes with requirements that generic Shopify setups often miss. A non-compliant store risks warning letters (Abmahnungen) and lost trust.

  • Legal pages & checkout: Impressum, Datenschutz, AGB and Widerrufsbelehrung linked correctly, with a “zahlungspflichtig bestellen” order button.
  • Prices & tax: gross prices incl. VAT, base prices (Grundpreise) and EU OSS VAT settings.
  • Payment methods: PayPal, Klarna (incl. invoice) and SEPA Lastschrift.
  • DSGVO & consent: cookie consent and tracking that respects the customer’s choice.
  • Accessibility (BFSG): accessible theme components for shops covered since 28 June 2025.

Shopify development in Germany: what you need to know

Answers to the questions German merchants ask most before hiring a Shopify developer or agency.

What does a Shopify developer do?

A Shopify developer (in German: Shopify Entwickler) sets up, customises and extends Shopify stores. Typical work includes configuring the store and checkout, building or adapting a theme with Liquid and Online Store 2.0 sections, integrating apps and third-party systems such as ERP, accounting or shipping tools, migrating data from another platform and improving speed and conversion. For larger brands, developers also build custom apps, Shopify Functions for discounts and shipping rules, and headless storefronts with Hydrogen.

How much does Shopify development cost in Germany?

Costs depend on whether you need a configured store, a custom theme or custom functionality:

  • Store setup with a premium theme: local agencies often quote €3,000–8,000.
  • Custom theme design and development: commonly €8,000–25,000.
  • Shopify Plus projects, migrations and custom apps: €20,000 and more.
  • Freelance Shopify developers in Germany: commonly around €60–120 per hour.

Our e-commerce website package starts at USD 499, and custom Shopify work is quoted at a fixed price in writing. Remember to budget for the Shopify plan, apps and payment fees — our Shopify cost guide breaks down the full total cost of ownership.

Shopify vs. Shopware vs. WooCommerce for German stores

All three platforms work in Germany. Shopify is fully hosted, quick to launch and easy to run without an in-house IT team. Shopware is strong for complex B2B/B2C catalogues and offers many German features out of the box, but needs more development and hosting effort. WooCommerce fits content-led shops already on WordPress, with German legal features added via plugins like Germanized. Read our detailed comparisons: Shopify vs Shopware and Shopify vs WooCommerce.

Which payment methods should a German Shopify store offer?

German shoppers prefer familiar, low-risk payment methods. Most successful stores offer PayPal, Klarna (including pay later and invoice), SEPA direct debit, credit cards and Apple Pay or Google Pay. Showing these options early — on product and cart pages, not only at checkout — reduces abandoned carts. We configure and test every method, including German order confirmation emails. See our guides to SEPA Lastschrift and PayPal on Shopify.

Is Shopify DSGVO compliant?

Shopify can be run in a DSGVO-compliant way, but the merchant is responsible for the configuration: a correct privacy policy, a data processing agreement, a cookie consent tool that blocks tracking until consent, and careful choice of apps that process customer data. We set up the technical parts and document which apps and tracking tools are used, so your lawyer or legal text provider can complete the privacy policy. Details are in our Shopify DSGVO checklist.

How long does a Shopify project take?

A standard store with a premium theme takes about 2–4 weeks. A custom theme, a migration from another platform or a Shopify Plus build usually takes 6–10 weeks, depending on the number of products, integrations and content readiness. We plan in milestones — design approval, development, data import, testing — so you can review progress on a development store before launch.

How to choose a Shopify agency or developer

Ask for live store examples, check how they handle German legal requirements, and make sure you will own the theme code and store. A good partner explains which apps you really need (fewer apps usually means a faster store), gives a fixed scope and offers support after launch. Our Shopify agency vetting guide lists the questions to ask.
